Mother's Milk Ceremony
When a mother’s milk comes in on the third day after birth, it comes in abundantly and begins a journey with breastfeeding. This journey is often sweet and beautiful but can be challenging and is certainly unfamiliar. A Mother’s Milk Ceremony brings support, meaning, and holiness to this new step in a woman’s life of using her breasts as a source of nourishment for the first time. This ceremony will have a similar feel to the New Mother’s Ceremony in that it will be a gathering of women that will feel causal and honest but also sacred. There will be comfort measures offered for the new mother’s breasts, special tea to welcome the milk, gifts given related to nursing, and time will be given to share supportive stories of breastfeeding.
I will meet with the mother at least once during her pregnancy to discuss who she would like to have at the Mother’s Milk Ceremony. I will then meet with her community of mothers and guide them through how to share Mother’s Milk Ceremony. I will be present for the ceremony to host and gently facilitate as needed. The husband or partner of the new mother and any children that are part of the immediate family are also invited to attend.
